As part of our Junior Entrepreneur Programme Connor represented 5th class at the Premier of Star Wars. Connor was treated to a VIP day. He started his day off at the Aghadoe Heights Hotel where he had hot chocolate then he was transferred by a private car to Killarney Cinema where he was interviewed and treated like a celebrity. Connor then watched the Star Wars movie. Well done Connor.
This year pupils in Fossa National School participated in the Team Hope Christmas Shoebox Appeal 2015. As part of the appeal, the pupils filled a shoebox with great gifts, including items for school, small clothing items, hygiene items and a treat. Congratulations to all pupils and their parents for engaging in such a worthy cause. These shoeboxes will bring a little hope, a lot of laughter and smiles to children in Africa or Eastern Europe. Fossa School were crowned East Kerry (6 to 8 Teacher )Champions after a 16 year wait. They defeated Faha, Rathmore and Kilcummin on their way to winning the cup. Captain Rian Colleran was presented with the Ulster Bank Perpetual trophy (Cumann na mBunscoil East Kerry). They then defeated Cullina School, Beaufort in the county semi-final. This was a very close encounter and a last gasp goal for Fossa sealed victory. The county final took place in Abbeydorney on Wednesday November 4th against Duagh. By Cian Doyle Our very first match was against Faha. We beat them by a lot of points. The next match after that was a challenge match against holy family. They beat us even though they never scored in the second half. Our next match was against Rathmore. We were slow to start but then we got a few goals and we won that match. In order to win our group we had to play Killcumin and it was a tough match but we managed to win. That put us in to the semi final against Cullina school. Fossa School’s 5th class boys were crowned East Kerry 6 a side soccer champions at tournament held recently in Killarney Celtic. Fossa boys emerged from their group undefeated by beating Faha NS, The Monastery BNS and Ballycasheeen NS. They competed against Monastery BNS 2 in the semi-final where they triumphed 4gls to 1gl. They played Firies NS in the final winning 5gls to nil. Rory Coughlan the team captain and goalkeeper was presented with a magnificent cup and trophies were given to all the winning panel. Congratulations to also to John O Mahony who coached this team to their first Schools soccer victory.
Congratulations to Maud Kelly, Jodie Sheehan and Sarah Sheehan who were crowned East Kerry Skills champions recently in Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney. All three girls had to complete 7 different GAA skills and successfully overcame the challenges from the most skilful representatives from all schools in East Kerry. Maud, Sarah and Jodie then went on to participate in the county skills competition where they performed brilliantly and were awarded third placed trophies. Special congratulations are extended to Sarah Sheehan who came 2nd in the county in the individual skills competition.
On Monday, April 13th last, 3rd class took part in Kerry’s Safe cycling programme which ran over a three week period. This is a collaborative initiative to help Primary school children to learn how to cycle in a safe and appropriate manner. Children learn road safety and to read road signs. They also are made aware of the importance of safety equipment-clothing and helmet. Children learned basic bicycle control skills, signalling and turning -Bike check. -Procedures for start, stop and emergency stop. -Signalling and turning. -Games and bike skills. -Group cycling. Fossa school took part in the All Ireland Spelling Bee Competition in April for pupils from 5th and 6th class. Three children emerged as winners from each class and took part in the Spelling Competition for the overall coveted prize of Spelling Bee Champion. After a nail biting contest, 6th class pupil Tova Buckley emerged as champion and represented our school in the county final in Tralee. Tova did the school proud by coming 5th out of 24 champion spellers. Well done Tova!
