Bridges

This week we discussed and studied bridges. We looked at and learned about six different types of bridges - the beam bridge, the truss bridge, the cantilever bridge, the arch bridge, the suspension bridge and the cable-stayed bridge. Mr. Corcoran showed us examples of all of these on the whiteboard. We looked at famous bridges such as the Golden Gate Bridge and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. We also discussed the different materials that are used in constructing a bridge.

Group Task:

Working in groups of 4 we had to construct the following bridges: a Beam, walled, arch and corrugated bridge

Materials:

2 - 4 x 2” pieces of timber

2 sheets of A4 paper

We used coins, pencils and matchbox cars as weights. It was good fun and interesting to see how they all varied in strength.

Individual Task:

Mr. Corcoran told us to go home and try to construct our own bridge using only newspaper and sellotape. We had a few days to do this. I found this task very enjoyable. I made a Beam Bridge. I learned that triangles made the strongest structure. I used triangles in all the main parts of the bridge. I really enjoyed this project. I hope we do something similar again soon.
